Instead of relying on traditional rocket-powered space tourism, these startups are revolutionizing the industry by offering stratospheric balloon rides to customers. These pressurized capsules, propelled by massive gas-filled balloons, are designed to carry a small group of tourists and crew into the stratosphere. With amenities like a central bar and bathroom aboard the capsule, passengers can enjoy a comfortable and unforgettable journey.

While the U.S. government defines the start of space at around 50 miles above the Earth’s surface, the founders of these space tourism startups have different perspectives on where space truly begins. Jane Poynter, the co-CEO of Space Perspective, argues that space can be regulated as soon as the capsule crosses 98,000 feet in altitude. This difference in opinion highlights the ambiguity surrounding the definition of space and its boundaries.

Unlike rocket-powered space tourism, where passengers may experience weightlessness and high G-forces, a stratospheric balloon ride offers a more serene and airplane-like journey. The lack of physical requirements to board the balloon makes it accessible to a wider range of individuals. Vincent Farret d’Astiès, the founder of Zephalto, emphasizes that if you can board a standard plane, you can board the balloon. This accessibility attracts a broader audience to the world of commercial space travel.

Despite the hefty price tags attached to these space tourism experiences, consumer interest remains high. World View, Space Perspective, and Zephalto have reported promising ticket sales, with prices ranging from $50,000 to $184,000 per seat. While Zephalto has already conducted crewed tests, the other startups are working towards achieving their target altitudes to ensure the safety and feasibility of their commercial space flights.

As the commercial space flight industry continues to evolve, these startups are at the forefront of redefining the way we perceive and experience space travel.
