Google Maps Changes Location Data Storage

Google Maps Changes Location Data Storage

Google Maps is making significant changes to how it handles your location data. Instead of storing this information in the cloud, Google will now keep it locally on your device. This shift was announced by the company in December as part of its commitment to enhancing user privacy. Users are required to save all their travel information to their mobile devices by December 1st to avoid losing any data.

Previously known as Location History, the feature now called Timeline allows users to track their routes and trips based on their phone’s location. This enables individuals to revisit past locations they have visited. With the recent update, Google will no longer tie this data to users’ Google accounts but will link it to the specific devices they use. This move aims to provide users with more control over their data and enhance privacy protection.

As part of the transition to on-device storage, users will no longer be able to access their Timeline from the web after December. To continue using this feature, individuals need to enable the new Timeline settings on their mobile devices. Failure to do so will result in Google attempting to transfer the past 90 days of travel history to the first device a user logs into Google on. Older data will be deleted as a result. To manage your location data preferences, open Google Maps on your mobile device, click on your profile picture, and select Your Timeline. Users can choose to keep their location data indefinitely or opt for auto-deletion after three, 18, or 36 months.

In addition to the changes in data storage, Google has been proactive in safeguarding user privacy. The company has removed sensitive locations such as abortion clinics, domestic violence shelters, and weight loss centers from location history. Furthermore, Maps has been updated to prevent authorities from accessing users’ location history without consent. By storing data locally on devices, Google aims to provide users with greater control over their personal information and travel history.

Google Maps’ shift to on-device storage for location data marks a significant change in how users’ information is managed. By empowering individuals to control their data and enhancing privacy measures, Google is prioritizing user security and transparency. As the deadline approaches, users are encouraged to take the necessary steps to ensure they retain access to their travel history and location data through the updated Timeline feature on their mobile devices.
