Manchester Airport, one of the busiest in Britain, experienced a significant disruption on Sunday as over 100 flights were cancelled, affecting thousands of passengers. The cancellations amounted to at least 20% of all incoming and outgoing flights, causing chaos and frustration for travelers. Aviation analytics firm Cirium reported that 66 departures and 50 inbound flights were cancelled, with easyJet being the most affected by the situation. The airport, operated by Manchester Airports Group, along with London Stansted and East Midlands airports, was hit by a major power cut in the area. Passengers at two of the three terminals were advised to stay away as a result of the power outage.

According to Chris Woodroofe, the airport managing director, the power cut caused problems with airport security and baggage systems, leading to the disruptions in flight operations. However, flights were able to resume in the afternoon, with Woodroofe expressing optimism that operations would return to normal by Monday. Jet2, one of the affected airlines, had to cancel multiple flights and faced challenges in loading bags onto planes due to the inoperable baggage system.
