Meta, previously known as Facebook, recently announced an update to its artificial intelligence content detection label. The company has replaced the original tag of “Made with AI” with a new label – “AI Info”. This decision came following criticism from Instagram influencers and photographers who found their posts incorrectly labeled as AI-generated content. Meta acknowledged that the old label did not align with user expectations and often lacked sufficient context. The aim of the new label is to eliminate confusion and provide users with more information about images and videos that have been edited using AI tools.
Enhancing Transparency through New Label
The update was highlighted in a revised post by Meta, where the company outlined its approach to labeling AI-generated content. Moving forward, posts will no longer be tagged as “Made with AI” but will instead feature the “AI Info” label. However, Meta will continue to flag posts that have undergone even minor edits using AI technology. While some users have already started to see the new label, full visibility is expected for all users in the coming days. By clicking on the AI label, users can access additional context about how the content was created or edited.
Meta emphasized that it employs industry-standard indicators to detect content created using AI tools. These indicators, such as the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) standards, help ensure transparency in content creation and editing processes. Despite ongoing efforts to improve AI labeling, there are still instances where AI-generated images go undetected by Meta’s tools. This underscores the importance of collaboration with other industry players to enhance the accuracy of AI labeling processes.
While the introduction of the “AI Info” label is a step towards increasing transparency, there are concerns about the potential misuse of the label. The widespread use of the label to flag images that have been minimally retouched using AI could dilute its intended purpose of identifying deepfakes and manipulative AI content.
