The latest DLC for Risk of Rain 2, titled Seekers of the Storm, was released last Tuesday and has received a significant amount of backlash from fans of the co-op roguelite game. The response has been overwhelmingly negative, with the DLC currently holding a 79% “mostly negative” rating on Steam. Fans have expressed a multitude of complaints regarding the DLC, particularly focusing on the numerous bugs and glitches that have plagued the game since its release.
Among the chief complaints from players are the abundance of bugs in Seekers of the Storm. Many players have reported that the DLC is so bug-ridden that it has affected the core systems of the base game. One of the major issues highlighted by players is the boss named Mithrix becoming invincible, which the developers have admitted is not intentional. Additionally, there is an issue that allows players to get stuck while performing a specific action in the game, such as smelling the flowers.
In response to the negative feedback, Gearbox – the studio that acquired Risk of Rain from Hopoo Games in 2022 – have released a blog detailing the known issues that they are working to address. They have encouraged players to continue submitting bug reports to help them identify and fix the problems. Despite the challenges faced by the development team, co-creator Duncan Drummond expressed understanding towards both the fans and the developers at Gearbox who are working tirelessly to address the issues.
Some members of the development team, such as lead programmer and co-designer Jeffrey Hunt, have defended the efforts put into the DLC within the constraints of time and resources. Hunt acknowledged that the team at Gearbox had shown promise with previous DLCs, but the rushed changes in Seekers of the Storm have posed significant challenges. Despite the difficulties, both Hunt and Randolph P. Itchford have assured fans that they are actively working to correct and improve the game experience.
The negative reception towards Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in game development and the importance of addressing feedback from the community. While the DLC may have its issues, it is evident that both the developers and the players are invested in the future success of the game. With continued efforts to address bugs and improve gameplay, there is hope that Risk of Rain 2 will overcome its current setbacks and regain the support of its dedicated fan base.
