The Delay in AMD’s Zen 5 Processor Launch

AMD was all set to release its new Zen 5 processors on July 31st, which included the highly anticipated Ryzen 9 9950X. However, the company has announced a delay of one to two weeks “out of an abundance of caution.” This delay affects the launch dates of the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X as well.

According to AMD spokesperson Stacy MacDiarmid, the delay is not due to any issues with the actual chips themselves. Instead, it was revealed that some of the chips did not go through all the necessary testing procedures. As a result, AMD wants to ensure that all the chips meet their quality standards before they are released to the public.

In a statement from AMD computing and graphics SVP Jack Huynh, it was mentioned that the initial production units of the processors did not meet the company’s full quality expectations. To maintain the highest quality experiences for users, AMD is replacing these initial units with fresh ones. As a result, there will be a slight delay in the retail availability of the processors.

Comparison with Intel’s Issues

The delay in AMD’s Zen 5 processor launch comes at a time when Intel is facing its own set of problems with unstable desktop processors. The 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors from Intel, including the Core i9-13900K and i9-14900K, have been causing issues. Intel has identified the root cause of the problem, but a patch won’t be available until August. Furthermore, there is no fix for chips that are already unstable, and they will need to be returned to Intel.

Despite the delay in the Zen 5 processor launch, AMD is gearing up to release its Zen 5 laptop chips as well. These chips, codenamed Strix Point and formally known as Ryzen AI 9 300, are set to hit the market soon. AMD has also unveiled a new higher-end chip in this lineup, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 375, which boasts a more powerful 55 TOPS NPU.
