The Horrors of Kletka: A Review

The Horrors of Kletka: A Review

Have you ever found yourself accelerating wildly every time you step out of an elevator? The fear of the elevator falling without warning and chopping you in half is a common one. This fear is not unfounded, especially when playing a horror scavenger game like Kletka. In this game, created by in404, players plummet through the layers of an “endless” post-Soviet Gigastructure, scavenging fuel, parts, and food for an elevator that has an insatiable appetite. The elevator itself is portrayed as a menacing creature with a roof that resembles a gnashing, lipless mouth. The sense of impending danger is palpable as players rush to complete tasks while feeling the elevator’s breath on their necks.

The Gigastructure in Kletka is not a safe place by any means. Rooms and corridors are dark and filled with traps such as landmines and electrified water. The game’s visual direction, reminiscent of the PS1 era, adds to the difficulty of spotting resources and items. Players must rely on a torch that needs to be periodically switched off and recharged. To make matters worse, there is a mysterious entity known as Samosbor that cannot be killed. The presence of red light signals the need to run for your life, much like fleeing from a Balrog with the mumps.

Kletka’s demo includes a multiplayer mode for up to four players, although crossplay with the full release is not available. The multiplayer mode allows players to spectate online games and join in when a vending machine is found in the Gigastructure, similar to rescuing Survivors in Left 4 Dead. While teamwork is important in the game, the Steam blurb for Kletka humorously suggests that “friends make for good fuel.” This highlights the necessity of cooperation, even if your co-op partners may not excel at the game.

Kletka offers a unique and immersive horror experience set in a post-Soviet Gigastructure. The game’s atmosphere, challenging gameplay, and multiplayer mode add depth and replay value for players looking for a truly terrifying experience. Whether it’s dodging traps, scavenging for resources, or outsmarting the elevator creature, Kletka presents a thrilling challenge for those brave enough to face its horrors.
