SpaceX’s Starlink internet-from-space service has already been making waves in the connectivity world, being accessible for boats, planes, vanlifers, Amazonian villages, and rural homes in over 75 countries. Now, the introduction of the Starlink Mini is set to reach even more individuals, including backpackers. The compact DC-powered Starlink Mini, roughly the size of a thick laptop, brings a game-changing element by integrating the Wi-Fi router right inside the dish. Despite its smaller power consumption compared to other Starlink terminals, the Mini is still capable of delivering speeds exceeding 100Mbps.
One of the standout features of the Starlink Mini is its remarkable power efficiency. The kit consumes an average of just 20-40W, which is a significant improvement from the 33-62W measured with previous Standard Actuated dish models paired with separate AC-powered Wi-Fi routers. This improved power efficiency opens up a world of possibilities for users, allowing them to power the Mini dish for several hours using portable power banks such as the Anker Prime 27,650mAh.
The Starlink Mini boasts a compact design, measuring 11.75 x 10.2 x 1.45 inches and weighing just 2.43 pounds. With the additional 49.2 foot DC power cable and kickstand, the weight slightly increases to 3.37 pounds. Its IP67 rating ensures protection from dust and rain, making it suitable for various environments, including outdoor use.
In the US, the Starlink Mini is available as an add-on to Residential plans at a cost of $599, which is $100 more than the standard dish. Additionally, users will need to pay an extra $30 per month to include the Mini Roam service with existing $120 Residential plans. This package offers up to 50GB of mobile data each month, with the option to purchase additional data at $1 per GB. While the Starlink Mini is a new offering in the US, it has already been available in countries such as Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama, where it can be purchased with various service plans tailored to different needs.
SpaceX’s goal with the Starlink Mini is to expand connectivity to individuals worldwide, especially in areas where traditional methods have been unaffordable or completely unavailable. By constantly working to reduce the price of Starlink services, SpaceX aims to bridge the connectivity gap and provide reliable internet access to underserved populations around the world. The company plans to expand the availability of the Starlink Mini to more markets over time, further advancing its mission of global connectivity.
The introduction of the Starlink Mini by SpaceX represents a significant step forward in the realm of global connectivity. With its compact design, power efficiency, and ability to deliver high-speed internet access to even more users, the Starlink Mini is poised to revolutionize connectivity for backpackers and individuals in remote or underserved areas. As SpaceX continues to push the boundaries of technology and affordability, the impact of the Starlink Mini on global connectivity is set to be profound.
