Amid the announcement of the official U.K. General Election date, TikTok has taken a proactive step by introducing a dedicated in-app General Election centre. The purpose of this new feature is to offer users reliable and authoritative information in the lead-up to the election. By teaming up with Logically Facts as their fact-checking partner, TikTok aims to combat misinformation and manipulation efforts by providing official information through its in-app resource.
TikTok reveals that a significant number of U.K. politicians have embraced the platform, with political parties like @uklabour, @ukconservatives, and @libdems establishing new accounts. Notably, even before the election, a considerable number of Members of Parliament had already created TikTok accounts, including popular figures like Labour’s Zarah Sultana and Conservative’s Dr. Luke Evans. Moreover, major U.K. news organizations have also leveraged TikTok to reach a wider audience, with channels like The Daily Mail, Sky News, the BBC, ITV News, and The Sun amassing millions of followers.
Given that a large portion of U.K. TikTok users fall within the 15-24 age bracket, questions arise regarding the platform’s impact as an information source for the election. Interestingly, individuals under 24 years old are statistically less inclined to vote, but with the app’s popularity among this demographic, it presents a valuable opportunity to engage first-time voters on crucial issues. As the political landscape evolves, there is a growing belief that this could be the inaugural “TikTok election”, with trends originating from the app potentially shaping public opinion. Consequently, it is imperative for TikTok to enhance its safeguards to uphold election integrity and furnish users with reliable resources for deeper understanding.
Acknowledging the significance of maintaining a trustworthy electoral process, TikTok is set to introduce additional moderation measures to identify AI manipulation and other forms of influence operations in the lead-up to the election. By fortifying its defenses against potential threats, TikTok aims to provide a secure environment for users to access accurate information and participate in informed discussions surrounding the election.
