Bonta emphasized the critical role that platforms like Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Reddit, TikTok, X, and YouTube play in shaping public opinion and providing access to information about elections.
In a letter addressed to the CEOs of these companies, Bonta highlighted key provisions of California state law that seek to prevent any form of interference with voting rights. This includes prohibitions on spreading false information about voting procedures and locations, as well as restrictions on the dissemination of malicious audio or visual content aimed at deceiving voters. The Attorney General’s warning underscores the potential legal consequences for companies that fail to address these issues.
The letter from Bonta comes in the wake of a controversy involving pop star Taylor Swift, who was falsely portrayed as endorsing former President Donald Trump through AI-generated images circulated on various platforms.
