WhatsApp Introduces New Feature to Block Unknown Messages and Like Status Updates

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to block messages from unknown accounts. This feature, spotted by a feature tracker, aims to enhance the performance of users’ devices while also ensuring the safety of their accounts. The toggle for blocking unknown account messages was recently rolled out to beta testers on Android, but is still in development and not yet available for users to try out.

The new setting, located under the Privacy > Advanced menu in the settings app, suggests that WhatsApp will block messages from unknown accounts if they exceed a certain volume. This proactive approach helps in maintaining the user’s account security and prevents any negative impact on the app’s performance. Although the feature will filter out messages from unknown senders, it is likely that some messages may still come through even after enabling the toggle.

In a comparison with Signal, another messaging app, WhatsApp’s approach to handling messages from unknown accounts differs. While Signal restricts messages from unknown accounts by default, WhatsApp will give users the option to Accept, Block, or Report a conversation initiated by an unidentified user. Furthermore, Signal does not show read receipts to senders until the recipient accepts the message request, adding an extra layer of security.

WhatsApp beta testers now have the ability to react to status updates with a heart emoji. This new feature allows users to quickly respond to photo, video, and text stories uploaded by other users, similar to how reactions work on Facebook and Instagram. After updating to the latest beta version, a new heart icon will be visible at the bottom right corner of the screen, next to the reply bar.

The feature to like status updates is expected to be rolling out to users gradually, as some users may not see it immediately after updating to the beta version. According to details shared by WABetaInfo, users will also be able to see a list of contacts who have reacted to their story. This interaction feature is anticipated to be available on both iOS and Android platforms in the upcoming versions of the app.

WhatsApp’s new features demonstrate the platform’s commitment to enhancing user experience and safety. The ability to block messages from unknown accounts and react to status updates provides users with more control over their interactions on the messaging app. As these features continue to develop and roll out to all users, WhatsApp aims to keep pace with other popular messaging platforms and offer a seamless and secure communication experience.
